Letters to Santa: 6 Mailbox Decorating Ideas for Christmas

While you’re hanging the string lights, blowing up the Christmas inflatables, and cloaking your porch in garland, don’t forget to extend that Christmas cheer to your mailbox! From greenery to magnets to ribbons, a festive makeover is the perfect way to ensure your mailbox is Christmas card-ready all season long. Not sure how to decorate a mailbox for Christmas? Here are six ideas to get you started!

1. Wrap Strands of Garland Around the Post

A simple and quick way to add some Christmas cheer to your mailbox is by wrapping classic green garland around the post. You can often find ready-to-wrap garland specifically for poles, but a bit of fishing wire can secure a strand of plain garland, too.

2. Secure Greenery, Pinecones, and Christmas Berries on Top

If you’re in the mood for a more elaborate DIY, consider creating a greenery arrangement to sit atop your mailbox. Cut a block of foam into a shape that can sit flush on your mailbox, and mount it there with fishing wire. With your foam securely on the mailbox, start pushing sprigs of greenery into the foam. Once it looks nice and green, add pinecones and berries into the arrangement using wire pipe cleaners to secure them. Play around with placement until you’re satisfied, and voila!

3. Top with a Decorative Christmas Bow

Grab an oversized ornamental bow and secure it to the top of your mailbox with a bit of fishing wire for another quick and easy holiday mailbox decoration. Take it even further by using Christmas-themed gift bows and ribbons as mailbox swag—and you’ve likely already got these items on hand for wrapping purposes!

4. Hang a “Letters to Santa” Felt Sign

Create a mailbox straight from the North Pole by adding a “Letters to Santa” sign. You can create a durable sign with felt, fabric glue, and some sturdy yarn or string to tie or hang on the mailbox. The added perk of this craft is that you’ll have a reusable mailbox decoration to use year after year. Just make sure to hang it somewhere that won’t cover your house number, otherwise, those “letters to Santa” may be held up!

5. Use Christmas Magnets to Jazz Up a Metal Mailbox

If you’ve got a metal mailbox, it’s never been easier to make it look magnetic for Christmas (pun intended). Simply purchase a pack of Christmas magnets and place them all over your mailbox. If you’ve got young kiddos, this is a fun and easy way they can contribute to your outdoor decor!

6. Create a Christmas Tree Mailbox

Though this is certainly the most involved DIY project on the list, it’s still absolutely beginner-friendly. Arrange several PVC pipes around your mailbox post in a teepee shape, with the actual mailbox extending out. Secure the pipes at the top with a zip tie or string, and then wrap the entire “structure” in green garland from top to bottom to create a cone “Christmas” tree around your mailbox. Add twinkly lights, ornaments, and a star to the top for the perfect DIY Christmas tree mailbox.
